Responding to Asterisk

Hi,

Read the Blog at Asterisk. You can react here.....

Lois

Comments:
Most of the comments on Asterisk about our blog were useful, and positive. It opened my eyes to read their comments on how, as PR professionals, we should be recognizing blogs as an important and prevalent communication tool. I also realized that many of our comments are made without background knowledge of the designers or their sites. That can be positive in the sense that we have no real bias about the sites except surface likes and dislikes. That can be negative in that we have a lack of understanding of the target audience and the artistry behind the sites. Overall, I was appreciative that professionals took the time to read our reviews and comment.

To be completely honest, the first thing I thought of about the situation is that for Web site design specialists, they must have a whole lot of time on their hands to bother looking at a beginner class blog. But some of their comments were helpful, some were completely unrelated and some were just downright rude. I'm a little annoyed that these "experts" actually took the time to take our quotes and make fun of us-I didn't really realize that that's what blogs are for. I do understand now that blogs can be good for fairly instant communication about a specific topic but I was under the impression that we were supposed to strive to be like these people and their comments didn't put that feeling in me.

After reading the comments made by the "professionals" it became apparent to me that the web sites we were requested to look at and comment about aren't really intended for us (the unexperienced)at all. Some of the comments were encouraging and positive. I think as a class we gave the professionals a different view about their websites. While some of those professionals appreciated our comments others did not. Some comments seemed degrading and intentially mocked us. I found Eric TF Bats comment offensive. In his comment he implied, at least to my understanding, that the reason we found some of the sites boring is because "we are too dumb to figure out how to entertain ourselves." Rude! Besides Eric's comment which particularly outraged me I found most of the comments to be helpful in providing us hints on how to become better web designers.

Hey everyone. Keith from Asterisk here. I just wanted to jump in and let you in on a few things. First off all I'm sorry for any negative comments. I allow people to come and say what they like, and some like to be negative and such. I don't condone it, but in the interest of open communication I don't try to regulate comments too much.

Also, many of the people who read my site are professional Web designers, but I've got all kinds there. Some are students like you, and some aren't even Web designers at all. Don't take too much of what they say to heart.

I am a Web professional myself, with 10 years experience, and I like what you guys are doing and the way you are learning about it all. I find it interesting and as I've got an interest in furthering my chosen career I'm excited to see what you have to say. In some ways I think we can learn from you. We are so close to our work it's hard to step back and see what people who aren't so involved think about things.

So thanks for that.

Take it easy and good luck with the rest of the class.

It seems like everyone has something different to say. Some people are positive, others are not so positive. I appreciate what Kieth had to say, and he's probably right for not regulating what people say on the blog. Even though their may be some negative comments directed towards us (or at least we perceive them to be negative), the people on asterisk perceive things differently too, just like us. Everyone has a right to their opinion and to express that opinion - even if people don't like it. Blogs are yet another public forum in the history of human communication. Say what you have to say - just try not to be an ass. And for those of us who are offended, try to step back and not take things personally. People are prone to say things a little more freely when you can't see them (i.e. posting on blogs).

Keep on talking - it makes like a lot more interesting.
