Graphic Designer Web Sites

What did you learn from exploring the Web sites this week? Share one idea that you saw that you'd like to try. (Be sure to tell us what site you saw it at.)

Comments:
I am discouraged when I come across a web site that is impossible to understand and when I have no clue what it is about. I was pleased to see that several of the listed sites had “about” sections. These were found on Simple Bits, Stop Design and Hicks Design.

My second complaint is against personal blogs. I do not understand why anyone is concerned with reading the day-to-day encounters of another person’s life (but I guess I don’t understand reality T.V. either). I must say that Daring Fireball is by far the most aesthetically pleasing and conserved self-promoting site I have come across.

There are so many adverse reactions to blogs, I think it is a mistake and a waste of space to feature them on the homepage of a designers site. If you are going to include a blog, I think you should follow Hicks Design, and make a link to the journal. Something I would love to try to incorporate in a site is a side menu with pull-down options, as featured on the Hicks Design site.

I can't say that I learned a whole lot from the readings this week. To tell the truth, it was all a little over my head. Not to mention that most of the meterial was pretty dull and dry.

However, if I must learn something, I would say that it's all about usability. Not that my site is really in need of a sitemap, I think it would be a good thing to have if my site had more content. also, it wouldn't hurt to have a search tool. I read somehting about these two things on the last site that we were asked to review.

I was really interested to see all the information on accessability, like the braille readers. I guess I always knew they existed but never think about it.
Asterisk was a really confusing site to me, because there were so many things to click on throughout the page. I went to several of the sites for the blog comparison and had different reactions to each. I really disliked Zeldmen.com, when I clicked on it I got an odd poem. When reading a blog certain words had links but the links took me to unexpected places. I also didn't like Daring Fireball. With such a powerful sounding name, you would expect a little more than grey colors and impersonal blogs. I'm not a big fan of reading others' personal information, but Daring Fireball was just extremely dull to me.
One site I really enjoyed was Hicks Design. It was very friendly and personable, and I felt compelled to keep exploring the site. His portfolio was great! One thing I would like to try is having pictures that when you put the mouse over them come up with a title of what they are, like on Hicks. I'd also like to try having a top bar like I saw on several sites with the links. It looks really organized that way.

From what I could understand from "A Primer for Accessible Web Pages," I think that it is a good idea to control the accessiblity of Internet sites. It's just like having a public business, you need to make the entrance and layout of your business accessible to customers.

I really did not understand the point of the "Asterisk" site. It just seemed like a place for designers to complain about stuff to one another I guess.

I thought that the compared blog sites were very different. I mean, there is only so much to can do to a website, but each had a different theme and look/feel. That is the important part to me. I really enjoyed "The Daily Report" by Jeffrey Zeldman. It was a very personal page, probably for family. I would enjoy reading something like that from my own family members.

I liked the fact that sites are required to have accessibility standards that they follow. It seems like not all are following the idea of user friendly navigation though. There are still an insane number of sites on the web that are very difficult to use.

One of the things that I liked about Asterisk was the option to continue reading each entry. It was nice to be able see what each entry was about, and not have to scroll through an entire site only to find that there was not anything that important to look at in the first place. I did not really like that the home page was the blog page, I feel that while a blog site for web design is nice, it is unprofessional to have a blog introduce a person and what they have to offer.

Mark's site was very unprofessional, but for a personal site, it was okay, I still don't understand the point of blogs... I liked that his navigational buttons were part of the picture at the top. I really liked the layout of Jeffrey's page, as well as the color scheme. His page had a more professional feel, for a blog. Dave's site confused me a little, I couldn't tell where to go, but I did like the search tool. Dan's site was a little confusing also, but I liked that he explained simple bits at the top of the page. on Jakob's site I had to force my eyes to look at the right colomn, the colors do not promote natural eye movement. John's site was easy to read, and navigate. Eric needs to add more pages, or navigation, there was way too much to scroll through. I really liked Douglas's page, the portfolio was well organized. Jon's page was probably my favorite, his homepage was like a welcome sign, very simple and to the point!

I like the idea of the navigation being part of the picture at the top of a page, this was one of my favorite ideas. I found this at http://diveintomark.org/ which seemed very neat and streamlined.

While I may not understand everything that was on the websites I was asked to explore, I like the look of a lot of them. Most of those web designers seem to describe to the K.I.S.S. theory and I like that. I would rather see extra space then have to look at a big jumble and pick out what I'm looking for.

Some people have commented on the idea of a personal blog and how they don't understand why anyone would post their day-to-day life but we need to remember that if it wasn't for this class, we probably would be visiting these sites and the people that visit these websites probably either know or at least communicate with the blog owner so it is more of a way for the webmaster to let his friends know what is going on.

I think the article about accessibility was informative, and it showed how to do some helpful things, but I think the majority of people who have websites know the demographic they are targetting and don't need to worry about making their site accessible. Granted, anyone could stumble across their site and send them a flame because it wasn't accessible, but I believe the instances of that are rare.

For me Asterisk was actually entertaining. I managed to side-track myself on that site by looking through his old "song of the week" listings. I found some songs and artists I happened to like and got caught up in reading the comments to his entries. I was unimpressed with his commentors, but overall I like his blog because he has a good scope of things. He doesn't just stick to one topic, but instead branches out and posts really whatever strikes his fancy at that moment. I like how it's put together and the ads are too distracting from it.

I enjoyed the colors on zeldman.com but it didn't seem like he had any real information. I think I'm too tired to dig deep enough. Mark's blog was pretty funny I thought. His commentor's were intelligent and actually interested in what he had to say. I'll have to go back to his site and poke around a bit more. I think it's too late for me to say anything coherent about mezzoblue.com. Skips. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of links on the sidebar at SimpleBits. Cut down on the links and I might be more interested. I cringed. I hate the colors and there are way too many links. I think Jacob needs to learn how to "use it" before he loses me. I would comment on more but I need to be in class in the morning to discuss all of this and sleep would be conducive to that. Too many blogs!

The article on web designers was hard to understand. I think they were conducting a study about content within the designers web sites and comparing them but the statistics were hard to understand. I did like his suggestions about including a search bar, copyright label, and utilizing a right side bar rather than a left to increase readership.

Hicksdesign: I really enjoyed the online portfolio section. The only suggestion I would make is to put some darker colors to balance out all the white and pastels.

Stop Design: The format and colors of this site are really good. I like the contrasts in colors and all the test is really easy to read. Loads of interesting information too.

Daring Fireball: Good information but a visually boring site.

Mezzoblue: Nice site, very colorful and the text is spaced out so you dont go into visual overload. I like the article called The Zen of CSS Design.

The websites were cool and I got some ideas of what to do on my own site. Pretty interesting.

In looking at the different design sites I saw that the majority of them pretty much looked the same. They were all very flashy with big bright headers followed by text blogs that really meant nothing to me. The only site that really impressed me was the last one by John Hicks. On his main page he had the buttons at the bottom so you weren't distracted immediately by them, but rather you were more focused on the text he had provided to tell the viewer what the site was. I found that very inviting.

Asterisk: This site was nicely organized and the use of color helped readability, but I didn't quite understand what the point of it was. Is it personal? Business related? Or simply a place for web designers to congregate? Basically, because I didn't know what it was, I didn't stay around too long.

Zeldmen.com: I really enjoyed their natural colors. The use of the large picture on the home page was intriguing. Again, I didn't really know what the point of the site was.

Diveintomark.com: The only part I liked was his picture heading. Props for that, and I would like to try it out.

Simplebits, Stopdesign, & Hicksdesign: These were all very nicely done. The use of colors and graphics made the site look very nice, and easy to navigate. They also had explainations as to what the site was.

Overall, I was annoyed with some of the sites because I could not figure out what the point of it was, or where to go in the site. The two items that popped out at me that I would like to try were the picture heading in diveintomark, and the graphic designs found in hicksdesign.

I read the Primer for Accessablity article first, and I found this article to be definately boring, but pretty informational. I thought the information regarding the braille was extremely interesting. I found as I got to the second page that a lot of the design codes looked familiar, but possibly a little more complex than what we have been doing in the classroom. Now Asterisk was a really cool site I thought because there were so many different things going on that you could look into. For example, there was the Green Day song of the week at the top that you could respond to. I looked around this site for a while, I liked the encouragment for participation and most definatley that our class blog was linked to the site. I visited the 1976 Design site after this because I wanted to check it out. I found it to be a fun site. It seamed like you could pretty much do whatever you want there. The top of the page reminded me of a storybook. The first blog I clicked into had a picture to disuss that just showed a little dog running along the beach. It was kinda funny. The second one I clicked into was a large dog running along the beach. Who would have thought. Next I visited A Whole Lotta Nothing, which as mentioned at Asterisk there was a lot more there than that. There was a blog on shopping, and even a blog on how often you wash your towel. I found that to be pretty funny. The site was really well designed and it wouldn't really matter what was there because it was just pretty to look at. Finally, I visited Angie McKraig's page which was extremely obvious that this was a woman. It was pink and white and really girly. I liked it very much. There was a blog talking about a baby who was born prematurely in July and he was finally able to come home. This is definatly only something that would be discussed on a females site. I also found it interesting that you could respond to blogs on celebrities. How you feel about them and so on. I thought this was kind of cool, and out of all the blogs I have looked at it would be one of the ones that I could see myself responding to out of class.

I found the article about web pages being accessible to everyone quite interesting. It is a great idea for anyone to be able to access the internet, but I it seems like quite a bit of extra work for web designers. Some pages may not have been created for everyone and so they are focused on one audience. But once the page has to be accessible to everyone, the content of the page may change dramaticly. It should be interesting to see where this idea takes the internet in the years to come.

With the Asterick page, I didn't not enjoy it because it was centered around those who have been connected to that page for awhile. Reading it, I felt like an intruder into other peoples' conversations. I found that if I were to have a blog, I wouldn't reveal lots of personal information for the whole world to read. For some people, they want the world to know what is happening in their lives, but I would not.

The primer on accessible web pages was a little boring but still very necessary. It just reminds us how many different factors a person has to take into account when designing a web page. With the ability for people to get more and more done from home over the web the need for federal websites to be accessible to everyone is critical and a logical next step. I can’t even begin to imagine the process and cost of converting some of these massive federal websites but it definitely needs to be done.

Now I’m going to post a blog about a blog that Darcie posted, about a blog posted on Asterick, about the blogs posted by us on our blog board. A little confused? So am I. Darcie made a really good point in the fact that blogs can be a little tedious and some can be down right useless but I also agree with the post by Diane site about how the blog has become a great new medium of communication. The fact of the matter is that any form of communication can be used and abused. People driving in cars with a cell phone in one hand and their coffee in the other are literally a danger to themselves and everyone around them. The World Wide Web is an amazing resource for information but for all its good uses, there are just as many bad uses such as, hacking, on-line credit card fraud, and the posting of child pornography. Even the mail, one of our older forms of communication, can easily be abused (the huge stack of junk mail sitting on my desk can serve as testimony to that). So when it comes to blogs, we really just have to take the good with the bad like every other form of communication that came before it.

I was very impressed by the website comparisons. Though much of the terminology they were comparing I wasn’t familiar with, I did find it fascinating that you could compare these sites on so many different levels. It really does prove that subtle details do count and that web design is an art. In my Communications research class we are discussing the ways we can convert something that might seem intangible into something that is quantifiable, measurable, and comparable. This website is a great example of how to do that, it takes the sites, breaks down by weather that site used a particular technique, and creates a percentage based on the sites that did or didn’t us that technique. This combination of research technique and web design impressed me.

Asterisk is an interesting site with blogs of the same caliber. I found it interesting that all these different site designers found that much interest in the education of beginning web designers. However, I thought some were overy critical, and perhaps assumed that we should know more than we do pertaining to web design. One person in particular found it necessary to comment that only one person used links in thier blog - a task that most of the class does not know how to do.It is simply a matter of using the href command, but beginners dont know that you can use that on web forms as well.

As far as blogs go in general - yes, most of them are quite pointless. But who cares. Some people are so critical about others blogs - as if they are concerned about running out of space on the internet. Fact simply put: the internet has no limit. So to those who greatly oppose blogs: If you find yourself stuck in a blog that you cant get out of...feel free to use the back button on your browser. Most blogs are not meant for you to read. This doesnt mean that you dont have access to them - of course you do - its on the net. But if you dont want to read it...DONT.

I definitely agree with the accessibility law. Internet sites should be just as open and avaiable to everyone as a business would be.

I was never able to access the Asterik web site. Every time I tried to scroll down the page, any text that the cursor was over would go blank. The page wouldn't scroll at all, and once I had tried to do that, the whole page went blank. I had this same problem last week, when trying to access it, so I am not sure what was going on. Obviously, that was frustrating.

The WebDesign sites were interesting and very different. I had a hard time understanding a lot of the survey, though. It was a little lengthy to hold my interest.

I enjoyed HicksDesign, and liked his use of color/graphics. In reference to the endless amount of blogs out there, I also liked how his site had them on another page that was just a journal of web blogs. I would like to try a site map like he used, but I think at this point, it would be overkill for my site.

The Primer For Accessible websites was actually quite pleasing to my eye. I like how the options on the site are off to the sides and the main message of the site is in the middle in a bigger font. I would like my site to look like that if I could actually figure out how to do that.
The Asterik site was not incredibly easy to maneuver and read. I didnt like how the side bar with links was off to the side but still towards the middle of the page. It just seemed to interrupt the main font of the page. I also didnt like how their was so much information on the page and I needed to scroll down a long ways to see it all. I would rather there be a links page to all the aspects of the site.
I can see that everybody kind of seems to have mixed reactions to the websites we visited. I think it would be a waste of time to read what other people have thought, because it seems that everyone has a different opinion, so you might as well save yourself the time and decide for yourself.

I find myself being a little suprised by both sides of the issues on web design and blogging. I am first suprised by the stir and interest sparked by the class blog. Second, I am a little disappointed by the lack of descriptive details on "why" the web sites that were not liked as well by members of my class were unliked. If some one tore you appart for the way you dressed, you would first be shocked, then you would be angry, eventually you would want to know why it was said in the first place. We all have a need to know "why", it is part of what makes us human. I think it is unfair to make a blanket complaint about something and not have any validation for the comment, espcially with a class full of P.R. and Journalism majors. If you truley want to be helpful and a genuine contributor, be specific. With that said I found it so amusing that some of our professional commentators had such fragile ego's. In general I was pleased with the spirit of joint learning, mutual commitment to the intelligent growth of web sites, and web design.

Most of the websites we were asked to explore were asthetically pleasing. I especially liked Hicksdesign, stopdesign, dive into mark, and mezzoblue. However, I quickly learned that while a site may look nice and be organized fashionably there purpose is not too clear. I am not sure I actually understood the purpose of any of them at first glance. Only after exploring the sites did I come to a minimal understanding of their purpose. I understand the sites to be personal sites of webdesigners where they can interact with fellow webdesigners through blogs, archives, and portfolios.

One element I saw that I would like to try is the way dive into mark used his graphics at the top of the page. It was simple yet interestingly unique. Another element I would like to try is the use of pop up menus such as those used on hicksdesign.

In regards to asterick.com I am not sure about its purpose either. I take it that it is just another personal site were one can converse with others about topics of similar interest.

One thing that made some of the sites more appealing and understandable than others is that they had a little blurp about what the site is. Simplebits, stopdesign, and hicksdesign all had a very brief "about" section on their homepage. This eliviated the confussion brought on by many of the other sites explored.

Assignment for 10-22-04
The first site that I visited was Dave Siegal's site. I read his article on Balkanization of the web. It was clear that what he was telling us many of us probably already know. That is that sites must have standards and we must build sites to keep up with society when we are now shopping, looking to travel, or even just surfing the web. I really enjoyed the womens resources section. It had a lot of fun tips for women. Daves Biography was really awesome too. You can tell by his pictures and his writing that this guy has a good sense of humor. His new site seemed to be based more about travel to me. Next I visited Greg Needhams, a former students, site. I think that this is a really well put together site. I thought it seemed very creative and I liked the work that he had done. I clicked on the list of clients for Greg and there were so many. Finally, I visited Lynda.com, which I had visited before. I thought that her site seemed really cluttered compared to the others. It's too much information all scrambled onto one page. Although boring and cluttered, her site seemed to really be based on learning and that is always something that we can all use some more of.

Hey nice blog. Although its not what I was looking for. I am looking for info on Payday Loans or a Cash Advance so I can buy some Hoodia Diet Pills.. I found your blog very interesting

So very glad I found this truthfully great site.
